Residential Program Print E-mail

In Fiscal Year 2008, the Residential Program served 205 people in 115 households, and 40% of those served were children. In spite of numerous challenges, Doorways' Residential clients have achieved a median length of stay of two and a half years.

DOORWAYS’ Residential Program is designed for individuals and families who are capable of independent living, but whose financial and health issues limit their ability to pay fair market rent. All residents have household incomes at or below 20% of the area median income and pay no more than 30% of whatever income they have for rent and utilities.

Since 1991, DOORWAYS has developed and now manages six apartment buildings at five different locations in St. Louis City as part of the Residential Program, making a total of 99 units available for individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS.

Single-person households make up 55% of residential clients, but another 21% are families with children. In response to their special needs, two buildings, Mama Nyumba (Swahili for “my mother’s house) and Kaya Malaika (Swahili for “village of little angels”) were developed to provide safe, affordable housing for low-income families at risk for homelessness. Together, Mama and Kaya comprise DOORWAYS’ Family Residential Complex, the only development of its kind in Missouri, and one of the few AIDS-housing developments in the nation that was specifically designed to meet the needs of single parents.
