Opening the door to life and awareness
Faith-based Doorways raises funds for AIDS outreach
By Jessica Bassett Of the St. Louis American
On any given night, disco soul sensation Sister Sledge can tear the roof off with musical hits "We Are Family" and "He's the Greatest Dancer." But on a recent Saturday night at the Chase Park Plaza, the four sisters were rocking for a cause.
They were singing to raise money to support housing for people living with HIV/AIDS in the St. Louis area at Doorways' seventh annual black-tie gala. This year's celebration was the most successful in Doorways' 20-year history, raising more than $250,000.
"It's a time not only to raise money for the organization but to come together as a community," said Matt Teter, Doorways' director of development and communications. "You look out into the crowd and you see corporate leaders, religious leaders and the gay community."
Out of their seven housing units dispersed throughout the St. Louis area, Doorways provides compassionate care to individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS. The organization has been a blessing to thousands since community and faith leaders (from the Catholic Archdiocese, a local rabbi, and the Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian and United Church of Christ congregations) formed it in 1988, when HIV/AIDS first became widely recognized. "We have not dealt honestly with HIV/AIDS in the black church," said the Rev. Frances Penn Cleveland, pastor of Asbury United Methodist Church and a member on Doorway's board of directors.
She got involved in Doorways around 1994 when her daughter was diagnosed with AIDS and subsequently passed away from the disease.
"There are people who were uncomfortable to talk about it, but now that's changing. Pastors are becoming more involved," Cleveland said.
Part of that change is because of Doorways, whose services are open to everyone. Many of their clients are too poor or too sick to adequately care for themselves. Over the years, Doorways has grown to understand that it needs to provide support services outside of HIV/AIDS. Therefore, in addition to providing medical care and housing, Doorways is looking to provide its clients with substance abuse, mental illness and domestic violence treatment, as well as education, parenting and life skills.
Each of the organization's buildings is equipped with everything needed to make one's "home-going" comfortable - one's own room, a good meal and plenty of friends. When asked what's in store for Doorways in the future, Cleveland was quite modest in her response. She quoted an African proverb, "Together, we can tie up an elephant."

with AIDS in the metropolitan area and their 300 children. The
Supportive Housing Facility, located in the City’s Central West End, provides
36 beds with nutrition and supportive services for residents whose HIV related
illnesses require 24 hour care. This is the only facility of its kind in the
State of Missouri. Doorways’ Subsidy program provides over
$1.7 million per year in rent and utility subsidies to help people with
HIV/AIDS keep their own homes. The Residential program offers 99 subsidized
apartments at various sites in St. Louis for persons living with AIDS who are
capable of independent living but whose finance and health issues limit their
ability to pay market rents.
Doorways was founded In 1988,
after faith and community leaders in the metropolitan region witnessed people being
reduced to poverty, isolation, and desperation by the societal reaction to HIV
and AIDS. These visionary leaders, who
represented area Catholic, Jewish and Protestant denominations came together to
form Doorways as an interfaith
housing organization. Their early conviction, that safe housing is the basic prerequisite for
the effective treatment, management and prevention of the disease, is affirmed
and strengthened by the results of a groundbreaking study known as the “Housing and
Health Study” sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD): Housing is healthcare. Housing
is prevention. Housing
is a human right.

Fact Sheet
|
(Click to view in PDF format)
These facts may be helpful when speaking or writing about Doorways.
Please feel free to use them when describing the organization:
Mission:
Doorways provides affordable, secure housing and related supportive services to people living with HIV/AIDS.
The Need:
Persons living with AIDS face profound financial, physical, and spiritual challenges. They often lose their jobs, their health insurance, and even their homes. They are unable to access social services, substance abuse treatment, and mental health programs. Homeless people living with HIV/AIDS have no place to keep their medicine, rest, and obtain proper meals and fresh water. As a result, some physicians refuse to prescribe complicated medication regimens, dooming the homeless to even more rapid progression of the disease. • Thirty-six percent of all HIV positive individuals in the U.S. have been homeless at some point since their diagnosis, and 50% will need some form of housing assistance during their lifetime. • In the St. Louis region, which includes the city and six Missouri counties, 5,174 people were living with HIV/AIDS at the end of 2004. • African Americans, who comprise 19% of the population of the St. Louis region, accounted for 52% of those living with HIV/AIDS at the end of 2004. • Fifty percent of all new infections occur in persons less than 25 years old. The majority of these young people are extremely poor, and an increasing number are women. • HIV infection was among the top four leading causes of death for African American women between the ages of 20 and 44 in 2001, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Moreover, it was the number one cause of death for women in the 25-34 age group. Nearly two-thirds of women with HIV/AIDS have annual incomes below $10,000 a year; 76% of them have children under age 18.
History:
Community leaders and representatives from the area's major religious denominations founded DOORWAYS in 1988. Their purpose was to address the growing need for housing for people with HIV/AIDS, especially the very poor and medically indigent.
Population Served:
DOORWAYS serves all people affected by HIV/AIDS regardless of race, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, pregnancy, status as disabled or veteran, or physical or mental disability. A fundamental concern is for the very poor and underserved, those who are homeless or at imminent risk of becoming homeless. With an annual budget of over $5 million, DOORWAYS has served over 4,800 households since its founding in 1988, and currently assists more than 570 adults and 300 children each month.
Programs:
Housing is healthcare. DOORWAYS programs allow persons living with HIV/AIDS to focus on treating their illness, rather than on homelessness, hunger, and looming financial crises.
-
The Supportive Housing Facility provides 36 beds for residents whose HIV related illnesses require 24-hour nursing, medication, and nutrition care. This facility is the only one of its kind in the region and one of only a few in the nation. In spite of the clients' poor health upon arrival at DOORWAYS Supportive Housing Facility, over 70% become well enough to move to independent housing.
-
The Metro Own Home Program provides over $1 million a year in rent, mortgage, and utility subsidies for individuals and families who are able to remain in their own homes but cannot afford these basic expenses. This program serves more than 700 people each year in St. Louis City and six surrounding counties. In addition, through partnerships with local organizations, the Outstate Missouri Next Step program serves clients in 79 rural Missouri counties and the Illinois Statewide Housing Program serves 55 counties in southern Illinois. Jumpstart, a special project under the Own Home umbrella, provides rental assistance and a wide array of support services to 18 single-parent households scattered throughout the city of St. Louis.
-
The Residential Program provides 99 subsidized apartments with supportive services for low income individuals and families with HIV/AIDS who are capable of independent living but whose financial and health issues limit their ability to pay market-rate rents. The program includes six buildings, each developed and built by DOORWAYS, and located at five sites throughout the city of St. Louis. Two buildings, Mama Nyumba (Swahili for "my mother's house") and Kaya Malaika (Swahili for "village of little angels") offer apartments and services designed specifically for the needs of single parents with children, including an on-site Learning Center. The most recent development, Partridge Place, is located in the 27th Ward, an area of the city with a higher incidence of new HIV infections than the city as a whole. DOORWAYS' staff works with local social services providers and AIDS care specialists to ensure that residents have access to effective medical treatment and other essential assistance.
-
The Next Step/Out State Program engages HIV/AIDS service providers and other community-based organizations in an effort to develop housing options for those affected by HIV/AIDS who live in rural and underserved communities. This 3-year demonstration project has contracted with two partners in Missouri and another two in Illinois to increase housing options for people living with HIV/AIDS.
Funding:
DOORWAYS programs are funded by a variety of sources, including government funds, grants, and individual donations. 78% of DOORWAYS funding comes from government and competitive public funds, whereas 14% of DOORWAYS funding comes from individuals, corporations, foundations and faith communities. The Metro Own Home program is funded by HOPWA (Housing Opportunities for Persons With AIDS), the Ryan White Care Act, MHDC (Missouri Housing Development Commission), and the HUD Section 8 Program. The Residential Program receives its funding from HUD 811, which provides 60% - 80% of the funding to build and operate the buildings. Other funding for Doorways programs comes through agreements with the City of St. Louis, administering funds provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Continuum of Care program, and from the St. Louis Affordable Housing Commission.
